What causes excessive collagen breakdown and how does this impact oral health? Are we treating the root cause of collagen breakdown or simply implementing a Band-Aid solution?
One of the hottest trends this year is collagen supplementation touted as the key to the ‘fountain of youth’ and antidote to many of our aches and pains. The hype though is supported by questionable science. Collagen repair and regeneration is a continual process however when chronic inflammation ensues, the opportunity for collagen and tissue repair is compromised. Not only is the periodontium severely impacted, our entire systemic health is placed at risk with collagen being the substance that provides strength and structure essentially holding our bodies together.
What causes excessive collagen breakdown and how does this impact oral health? Without collagen there is no periodontium. Are we treating the root cause of collagen breakdown or simply implementing a Band-Aid solution? What we do know is that continuing to ignore the inflammatory component of periodontal disease and treating it as a bacterial infection only is placing our dental patients at ongoing risk for systemic disease. In fact, the AAP has redefined periodontal disease as an inflammatory disease capable of far reaching systemic implications.
An incidental discovery back in the early eighties led to a proposed therapeutic approach that blocked host-derived collagen-destructive enzymes subsequently launching an extensive amount of further research. As a result of this compelling research, the most current JADA guidelines for treatment of chronic periodontitis are now based on this same principal and mechanism of action. Time to put the science into practice!
- Understand both the motivators and the limitations of the growing trend of collagen supplementation
- Recognize the role of collagen and how it impacts oral health and systemic health
- Understand the relevance of treating collagen breakdown in order to achieve more sustainable and predictable results for chronic periodontitis
- Ensure the current JADA guidelines are being reflected in today’s periodontal treatment planning to prevent excessive collagen breakdown
